Albert Bañuelos is a probation director with the Los Angeles County Probation Department, currently assigned as the executive staff director for Juvenile and Adult Operations. Since joining the department in 2001, he has served in both sworn and unsworn administrative positions, including—prior to becoming probation director—Group Supervisor Nights, Detention Services Officer, Deputy Probation Officer I & II, and Special Assistant. He has experience with both youth and adult populations, having worked in juvenile hall and juvenile camps, including serving as manager of L.A. County’s flagship juvenile camp, Campus Kilpatrick, and supervising adults on probation under both AB 109 and the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) supervision program. Albert was previously part of the administrative team charged with implementing an EBP supervision model throughout the L.A. County Probation Department’s Adult Supervision Division. He is currently leading the effort to implement the EBP Developmental Stage System throughout all the juvenile camp community facilities. Albert has facilitated professional and staff development training in Los Angeles County as well as in Alameda County, including training various levels of staff in evidence-based practices.

Melanie Daly-Stormer began her career in the field of community corrections in Macon County, Illinois, after receiving her bachelor’s degree in social work from Southern Illinois University in 1996. She has worked in every facet of community corrections in the state of Illinois. While serving as a juvenile probation officer, she implemented a high-risk youth program that included the delivery of the first cognitive-behavioral intervention in downstate Illinois. She went on to work in managerial positions, including serving as an adult probation field unit supervisor, a clinical resources supervisor, and a chief managing officer. She was instrumental in the implementation of evidence-based practices in each of these positions.

Linda Denk has more than 25 years of experience in the corrections field. After earning her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she worked in a residential halfway house for state and federal women who were system-involved and their children, age 2 and under. Linda joined the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in 1998, where she served as an adult probation and parole agent for six years until she was promoted to staff development specialist in 2004. In 2008, she assumed the role of staff development program director, a position she continues to hold.

Erin King has more than 25 years of experience in the corrections field. While earning her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, she worked in a juvenile residential treatment center. She began her service with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in 1994, where she served as an adult probation and parole agent for seven years until she was promoted to corrections field supervisor in 2001. In 2011, she worked with the Office of the Secretary’s Reentry Unit as a cross-divisional coordinator. In 2012, she assumed the role of assistant regional chief for probation and parole in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—a position she held for three years prior to joining Carey Group as a training coordinator. Erin then became director of justice programs for The Difference Principle and then customer success manager at Volaris Group but continues to work with Carey Group as a trainer. Erin provides skill-based instruction on evidence-based principles and practices, COMPAS risk assessment tool administration and scoring, Four Core Competencies, Carey Guides and BITS, the Supervisor’s EBP BriefCASE, and the 10 Steps to Risk Reduction. Additionally, Erin is certified to evaluate corrections programs using the Correctional Program Checklist (CPC) and trained to facilitate the Real Colors curriculum. She has particular interest and expertise in victims’ rights and advocacy, community justice, evidence-based decision-making, dosage probation, corrections’ role in early justice interventions, and Behavioral Health Treatment Court.

Jay Leamy is a deputy chief probation officer in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Jay has been a juvenile probation officer for more than 25 years, at first supervising diverse populations and then transitioning into specialized positions of aftercare and intensive supervision and managing people convicted of sex offenses. While managing a caseload, he was also responsible for supervising community-based probation officers and specialized probation officers, and for overseeing the management of people in residential settings as well as fiscal matters related to community-based and residential-based services. In his current role as a deputy chief probation officer, Jay directly supervises specialized probation officers, oversees court operations and internal family counseling services, manages intake processes, and monitors departmental quality assurance operations. Since 2006, Jay has taught a variety of undergraduate courses in the Anthropology and Sociology Department and in the Criminal Justice Department at West Chester University, as well as in the master of science program, Administration of Juvenile Justice, at Shippensburg University. Jay earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from West Chester University and a master’s degree in sociology, with a concentration in criminology, from Saint Joseph’s University. He is currently a doctoral student at Alvernia University, pursuing a PhD in philosophy of leadership. Jay joined Carey Group’s training team in 2015.

Stacy Ledvina has been a trainer for Carey Group since 2013. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a bachelor of social work and from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a master of social work. She has been employed in a variety of positions at the Manitowoc County Human Services Department since 1998, primarily in the juvenile justice field. Currently, Stacy is a supervisor of the Youth and Family Services Unit.

Michelle Lunn has more than 25 years of experience in the justice field. After earning her bachelor’s degree in criminology, she worked in Fresno County, California, as a probation officer with youth who were detained in a six-month local program. She moved to Arizona in 1995, where she became a youth detention officer and transitioned to a probation officer position shortly thereafter. She has worked various field assignments, including standard and intensive probation. She became a probation officer training coordinator before being promoted to supervisor in 2002. She has held supervisory roles in the detention facility, intensive probation, training unit, and staff development. She was instrumental in implementing evidence-based practices (EBP) within the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department and ran an early adopters’ group for staff interested in increasing their knowledge and skills around the use of EBP. She has experience in the development of policies and procedures related to EBP and has participated on an EBP sustainability committee. Michelle is currently the detention division manager at Pinal County Juvenile Court Services, and has also managed the probation, diversion, and treatment divisions. Michelle holds a master’s degree in education and has a passion for coaching and educating staff. She participated in the Reimagining Juvenile Justice Train-the-Trainer initiative in 2019 and has facilitated courses for juvenile justice system partners. She joined Carey Group’s training team in 2019.

An experienced trainer of professionals in corrections, education, and community-based organizations, Aila Malik joined Carey Group’s training team in 2015. For more than 20 years, she has also worked as a nonprofit entrepreneur and executive, including serving as the chief operations officer and chief strategic officer of Fresh Lifelines for Youth, a national organization focused on preventing juvenile delinquency and incarceration, and launching reentry programming for adults who are justice-involved. In addition, Aila has developed juvenile justice protocols for probation departments throughout the country; served on the leadership team for Disproportionate Minority Contact/Confinement issues in Santa Clara County, California; and held adjunct lecturer positions for juvenile justice courses at Santa Clara University School of Law and Lincoln Law School. In 2015, Aila founded Venture Leadership Consulting (VLC), which specializes in executive coaching, organizational change, and developing and implementing strategic initiatives in the nonprofit and public sectors. Through VLC, Aila and her team have worked with nearly 100 organizations amid change initiatives—developing and refining methodologies to help them clarify, efficiently operationalize, and scale their intended impact.

Al Montellano joined Carey Group’s training team in 2019. After serving a four-year tour of duty in the United States Navy, he began working with the Los Angeles County Probation Department in 1989. While working in the probation department, he continued his education and graduated from California State University, Los Angeles, with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration. His first position was as a detention services officer at Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles. Since, he has held roles in a variety of L.A. County Probation Department bureaus, including four tours in L.A. County’s youth camps under the Residential Treatment Services Bureau, as a juvenile field deputy in the Juvenile Field Bureau, as a field deputy in the Adult and AB 109 Bureaus, and as a training coordinator and trainer in the Staff Training Bureau. As a supervising deputy probation officer, he oversaw the work of both juvenile and adult field deputies in various assignments. He is currently the assistant director of a juvenile camp in the Residential Treatment Bureau of Los Angeles County, providing managerial supervision to over 70 staff members. Al is also the bugler in the department’s honor guard.

Matt Moore’s career has spanned every aspect of the correctional system. He has worked as a probation and parole officer, as a supervisor, and as a criminal justice executive in faith-based programs, state and local corrections, and the private sector. Among his accomplishments are developing and implementing prison-based cognitive-behavioral programs, day reporting centers, outpatient substance abuse programs, programs for people convicted of sex offenses, residential treatment programs, and intensive supervision programs.

Karen Peterson comes to Carey Group with over 25 years of experience working in all facets of the justice system. She has a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University and a master’s degree from Michigan State University. Karen spent the early part of her career working for Genesee County, in Flint, Michigan, at a juvenile residential center and then for 5 years as a juvenile probation officer. Since leaving Genesee County, Karen has worked for Oakland County, Michigan, in its Community Corrections department.

Reginald Prince has worked in various positions in corrections in his 22-year career, starting as a correctional officer and moving onto roles as a probation officer, evidence-based practices (EBP) planning specialist, and juvenile treatment facility supervisor. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), a National Institute of Corrections’ Technical Resource Provider for Thinking for a Change (T4C), a Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI 4.1) coder, the lead trainer for MI with Minneapolis College’s continuing education department, and a trainer of trainers in LS-CMI, YLS-CMI, MI, case management, T4C, and other EBP programming. He has trained professionals in fields such as health care, social services, chemical dependency, severe and persistent mental illness, and corrections to be facilitators, coaches, trainers, and practitioners of effective behavior change practices. Reginald has also led strategic planning and implementation of EBP programming for several state, local, and county departments; he has co-authored a practitioner’s guide to implementing cognitive-behavioral programming, Implementing Successful Cognitive Behavioral Interventions: Program Administration and Management; Staff Development; Application to Diverse Populations; and he is co-founder and vice president of KWST, an education equity nonprofit organization.

Regina Whitaker has 26 years of correctional experience with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She began her career at San Quentin State Prison as a correctional officer and, in 1998, was promoted to the Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO). During her time at DAPO, Regina worked through the ranks from parole agent to parole administrator to district administrator.
