What's Included:
Often, staff are trained in evidence-based practices but aren’t sure how to apply what they learned to their day-to-day work. The Carey Guides were designed to help.
Thirty-three Guides equip justice system and behavioral health professionals with the information and tools they need to support behavior change and skill development among their clients. Fourteen Blue Guides specifically address criminogenic needs such as harmful thinking patterns, the negative influence of peers, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. Nineteen Red Guides address common case management issues, including case planning, motivating people to change, maximizing strengths, responding to prosocial and noncompliant behavior, and working with people who have mental health challenges.
Each Guide follows a consistent format. Background information provides important research findings and contextual information to support the application of evidence-based approaches. Each Guide also contains two to five tools (worksheets). These tools are designed to help clients understand risk factors, triggers, and other conditions that are essential to their success. In total, the Guides contain 100 tools—supporting a long-term case management approach that helps people build skills and make positive changes in their lives.
